Alipay & Weixin Pay for foreigners: a 2026 field report

Cash is no longer king in tier-1 and tier-2 cities. Most cafés, taxis, and metro gates expect QR or tap. Major wallets now support international cards for top-ups in many cases, but success varies by card issuer, KYC depth, and whether your phone region matches your ID on file.

Practical stack we recommend

  1. Install both Alipay and Weixin; verify passport linkage before departure if possible.
  2. Carry ¥300–500 cash as outage insurance.
  3. Keep a hotel business card with Chinese address for taxi drivers.

If a merchant’s QR fails, ask calmly for “shua ka” (card swipe)—larger chains still run POS rails. Screenshots of someone else’s payment code are useless; always generate fresh codes from your app.
