Alipay & Weixin Pay for foreigners: a 2026 field report
Cash is no longer king in tier-1 and tier-2 cities. Most cafés, taxis, and metro gates expect QR or tap. Major wallets now support international cards for top-ups in many cases, but success varies by card issuer, KYC depth, and whether your phone region matches your ID on file.
Practical stack we recommend
- Install both Alipay and Weixin; verify passport linkage before departure if possible.
- Carry ¥300–500 cash as outage insurance.
- Keep a hotel business card with Chinese address for taxi drivers.
If a merchant’s QR fails, ask calmly for “shua ka” (card swipe)—larger chains still run POS rails. Screenshots of someone else’s payment code are useless; always generate fresh codes from your app.
