Caregiver burnout: small boundaries that actually help
You cannot pour from an empty cup—but platitudes do not refill it. Concrete steps do.
Name three non-negotiables
Examples: eight hours of sleep three nights a week, one afternoon off, no medical decisions after 9 p.m. Tell other family members explicitly; vague help offers waste energy.
Ask for specific tasks
“Can you drive Tuesday?” beats “Let me know if you need anything.” Keep a shared list in the kitchen or a simple group chat thread.
Respite
Adult day programs, volunteer visitor programs, and paid respite exist in many regions—your local aging services agency is the first phone call.
