Colonoscopy prep: clear liquids, timing, and rides home

Screening colonoscopy prevents cancer by finding polyps early. The least pleasant part is prep night—but shortcuts cause poor visualization, which can mean repeating the whole process.

Read your packet when it arrives—not the night before

Different centers use different laxative kits. Highlight stop times for blood thinners, diabetes medications, and iron supplements—never adjust prescription meds without explicit written instructions from your team.

Clear liquids: what “clear” actually means

Chilling the prep, sipping through a straw

Cold liquid tastes milder to many people. Slow steady drinking beats racing—vomiting prep derails the schedule. If nausea hits, call the on-call number early; anti-nausea meds sometimes help.

Arrange a driver. Sedation impairs judgment for hours; taxis alone are not enough if you are groggy climbing stairs at home.

Diabetes-specific edges

Your team may adjust insulin or pills around fasting and prep. Monitor glucose more often; treat lows with clinician-approved clear sugar sources only.

Afterward: gas, diet ramp, and biopsy timing

Air insufflation causes bloating—walking helps. Resume blood thinners per written plan. If polyps were removed, activity or travel restrictions may apply—ask before booking flights the next day.
